For your tour this afternoon you will
travel by Classic Vintage motor cars such as a 1936
Chrysler or 1939 Jaguar. Depart from Cowes for a truly
luxurious journey to Morton Manor.
Believed to have been originally built in 1249, Morton
Manor is situated on the site of residence of the de
Aula family who were of Norman descent. Since those
times, the Manor has been altered with the addition
of a Tudor Longhouse and then major re-building in the
year 1680. The home was refurbished in Georgian times
and now retains that style as a charming family home.
The gardens, considered by many to be the most beautiful
on this 'Garden Isle', are a delightful blend of formality
and informality. 40 years of hard work have made it
possible to grow a wide variety of plants and flowers,
and reward is provided by the amazing massed cresendo
of flowers from March to July. As Summer arrives many
varieties of Roses produce a riot of colour in the formal
rose and Elizabethan Sunken Gardens. Along with the
traditional herbaceous borders, they last well into
Autumn when the huge collection of Japanese Acers go
through 'traffic light' colour changes.
There are displays of Rhododendrons, Azaleas, Camelias
and Magnolias; Roses, Herbaceous borders, Japanese Acers,
countless specimen trees including possibly Britain's
largest Magnolia grandiflora and London Plane; all set
around the many tender plants that thrive in the island's
mild climate.
Enjoy a special visit of the house and gardens and
learn more about this fascinating garden. Following
your tour enjoy a traditional clotted cream tea and
some free-time to peruse the gardens at your leisure
before returning to your Ship
