During your comprehensive city tour
see many of the highlights of this cosmopolitan city,
nominated as the European Capital of Culture in 2008
and of course the home of the world famous Beatles.
See Matthew street, immortalized by the Beatles and
the Cavern Club. Travel out to Penny Lane and hear of
the Beatles rise to fame.
Visit inside the vast Anglican cathedral, completed
in 1978 after some 75 years of building. Built on an
overwhelming scale, the red sandstone structure is the
largest Anglican cathedral in Britain and the fifth
largest in the world. The Cathedral abounds in superlatives:
highest gothic arches, largest organ, heaviest ring
of bells but the grandeur is balanced by a great sense
of welcome and peace. The whole Cathedral is used imaginatively
for many purposes - worship, concerts, exhibitions,
recitals, displays.
Head to the Albert Dock, which is at the heart of Liverpool’s
Historic Waterfront and includes many different attractions.
Albert Dock was an integral part of Liverpool’s
once mighty stretch of dockside developments, the fine
brick warehouses have now been lovingly restored and
converted to create one of the largest heritage attractions.
Then, cross under the Mersey to the Wirral Peninsula
for a visit to the quaint village of Port Sunlight.
This attractive Victorian garden village was built in
1888 by William Hesketh Lever, later Lord Leverhulme,
for the workers in his soap factory. Every house is
built to a different design, and even today, they are
still mainly occupied by descendants of the workers
or their families. Visit the Heritage Centre which explains
the unusual history of the village, and enjoy free time
to explore at leisure.
