Departing from your ship enjoy a scenic
drive to what is probably the finest castle in England,
Bamburgh Castle. The magnificent and dramatic coastal
setting of this completely restored medieval castle,
perched high on a bluff overlooking the North Sea in
Northumberland, has attracted the eyes of many a film
director. Commanding stunning views of the Farne Islands,
Holy Island and inland to the Cheviot Hills, the Castle
is visible for many miles.
Visit this fascinating Castle and enjoy some time to
peruse the museum housed within, which is a treasure
trove of local history, with collections of military
artefacts, paintings, china, and furniture. Pause to
take some photos of the empty and unspoiled beaches
below the castle before re-boarding your coach to continue
your tour with the drive to Holy Island.
The island played a significant part in the development
of Christianity in England. In 635 AD, the Irish evangelist,
St Aidan, founded a monastic community that became one
of the most important centres of Christianity in Anglo-Saxon
England. Upon arrival on Holy Island enjoy some free
time to explore the village and enjoy lunch before rejoining
your guide to visit Lindisfarne Castle.
Viking raids finally forced the monks to abandon the
island in 875 AD, but in 1082 St Cuthbert rebuilt the
Priory, the remains of which can still be seen. Later
today return to Newcastle
