Some of the best preserved remains
of the Roman occupation of Britain lie in the countryside
to the west of the city of Newcastle. Almost 2000 years
ago the Emperor Hadrian ordered that a Wall be built
across the narrowest part of northern England. Stretching
73 miles the Wall served as a permanent reminder that
this was the north west frontier of a vast, powerful
Empire. The international importance of Hadrian’s
Wall was recognised in 1987 with its designation as
a World Heritage site.
Our tour today leaves Newcastle and heads into Northumberland
to begin your tour to this fascinating site. Enjoy a
stop at Hadrian’s Wall before arriving at Vindolanda;
a fascinating Roman fort and settlement lying just to
the south of Hadrian's Wall. Recent excavations have
uncovered numerous buildings and some of the most unusual
and well preserved artifacts from the Roman world. In
the superb site museum, set in charming gardens, you
will be able see Roman boots, shoes, armour, jewellery
and coins.
Vindolanda Fort also boasts a full size replica of
Hadrian’s Wall in both stone and timber, giving
visitors a true idea of the impressive might of the
monument.
Following your visit to Vindolanda rejoin your coach
and drive to the historic and picturesque market town
of Hexham with its 13th century Abbey, shops and quaint
tearooms. Enjoy some free time to visit this lovely
quaint town and enjoy lunch (not included) before the
return drive to your awaiting ship.
