Campbeltown -
Gigha Island Walking Tour (half day) |
The Isle of Gigha is the most southerly
and, perhaps, the most beautiful of the Hebridean Islands.
Seven miles long by a mile and a half wide, Gigha is situated
three miles west of the Kintyre peninsula. During your
walk here your guide will explain the islands recent history
since its community buy out just 3 years ago. For many
decades before community ownership Gigha had been in decline;
a shrinking community of fishermen and farmers. In the
early 1970's there were nearly 200 inhabitants by 2002
there were less than 100. Where there had been 30 children
in the school there were now 7, where once there were
10 farms 3 remained. Since the buy out in 2002, the population
has already increased to 121, the school now has 13 pupils
and new industry, business and houses are being built.
It is an exciting time on this beautiful little island!
Arrive on the island from the 20 minute roll-on roll-off
ferry journey from Tayinloan on the mainland. Gigha has
always enjoyed a special reputation for the variety of
scenery, wild and birdlife; peace and quiet and total
relaxation that it offers. This is only surpassed by the
friendliness of the Gigha residents. Gigha is the southernmost
island of the Inner Hebrides, and because it is low lying
and influenced by the North Atlantic Drift the climate
is drier and warmer than that normally associated with
the west coast of Scotland. The island can boast beautiful
bays, stunning views and breathtaking sunsets, lochs and
gently sloping hillsides as well as a plentiful variety
of wild and birdlife. The climate directly influences
the world famous Achamore Gardens - over 50 acres of rare
and unusual plants surrounded by picturesque woodland.
Visit Achamore Gardens during your guided walk today and
experience all that is uniquely special to this charming
island - a truely Scottish experience. |
