Head south of Invergordon and Inverness
today to the infamous Loch Ness for a chance to glimpse
the Loch Ness Monster (perhaps!). Your first visit will
be to the wonderful Urquhart Castle. A critical strategic
stronghold in the highlands, positioned on the banks
of Loch Ness, which would have been a main route through
the Great Glen of the highlands. It’s chequered
history came to a dramatic demise in 1692 when the castle
was blown up to stop it falling into Jacobite hands!
What remains are picturesque and impressive ruins,
surrounded on three sides by the cold deep waters of
Loch Ness. An excellent new visitor’s centre offers
exhibition, film show, shop and restaurant. Visit the
Castle today with your guide to learn of it’s
dramatic history that dates back in written records
to the 1200s, but in archaeology and folklore right
back to the Iron age and the Picts. Spend some time
exploring at your leisure.
A few minutes from Urquhart is the little town of Drumnadrochit
– home to the Loch Ness Lodge Visitor’s
Centre. Enjoy a visit here to gain an insight into the
history of the mythical Loch Ness Monster. Perhaps buy
a souvenir or two to take home with you?
Photo opportunities today will be plentiful! Enjoy
the drive back through the scenic Highlands and back
to your awaiting ship in Invergordon.
