Mull – Tobermory/Craignure - Iona Abbey

Exiled from Ireland, St. Columba arrived on Iona, West of the Isle of Mull in 563AD to found his church and create a centre of learning known throughout Europe.

Initially enjoying over 200 years of tranquility, Iona was attacked by raiding Norsemen in 795, 801, 806, 825 and 986. Rebuilt in 1074 Iona became a cathedral in 1500. Sadly all the religious buildings on Iona were later broken up during the Reformation. It wasn't until 1910 that the abbey was restored. The burial ground on Iona is recorded to hold the remains of over 60 Scottish, Irish and Norse kings.

Today you will be met at the pier by knowledgeable local guides. They will lead you to the Abbey (a 10 minute walk) and guide you around these majestic remains. Learn all about the history of this building and its place on Iona before returning to your ship. Guests may wish to delay departure from the pier to enjoy refreshments at any of a number of tea rooms in the village at their leisure.
