The city of St David’s would be no more than
a village; were it not for the fabulous cathedral that
lies at its heart. Built hidden in a depression below
the town square in the hope that Norse invaders would
pass without noticing it, this 12th century cathedral
is magnificent and steeped in antiquity. The floor slopes
three feet upwards and the pillars lean drunkenly (though
not precariously!) as the result of an earthquake in
1248. This cathedral is the only one in the United Kingdom
in which the reigning monarch has a permanently reserved
pew. You will also have the chance to visit the extensive
ruins of the 12th century Bishop’s Palace which
extend along the side of the cathedral.
After lunch at the Warpool Court Hotel in St Davids
(note the strong presence of Phillip’s family
history on the walls of the hotel) journey on to Picton
Castle. This 14th century castle (more a castellated
large private home) was built by the Philipps family
and is still inhabited by them today. Your exclusive
visit to the castle will be enhanced by the chance to
meet the owner himself who will host a delicious afternoon
tea in the drawing room.
Return to the ship having experienced some of Wales’
finest heritage.
