Drive this morning to the picturesque
seaside resort of Tenby, where pastel-coloured Georgian
houses cluster around the harbour, and two golden sandy
beaches stretch below the cliff. Medieval Tenby’s
ancient town walls still stand, enclosing narrow streets
and passageways full of shops, inns and places to eat.
See the ruins of Tenby’s castle, and visit the
15th-century Tudor Merchant’s House, a relic of
Tenby’s highly prosperous seafaring days, with
original fireplaces and chimneys. Enjoy lunch in one
of Tenby’s fine restaurants, with some time free
for independent exploration.
From Tenby, take a boat trip to holy Caldey Island
three miles off the coast. Caldey has been inhabited
since the Stone Age, and has been home to various orders
of monks since Celtic times. It is now owned by monks
of the Cistercian Order, whose picturesque monastery
overlooks the Village Green and the pretty cottages
of the islanders. Explore the historic Old Priory and
the medieval churches of St David and St Illtud, and
if you wish, attend one of the short chanted services
in the Abbey Church, which form part of the daily prayer
life of the monks. In the village you can buy the perfumes,
chocolate and shortbread made on the island. The Village
Post Office is also a museum giving an interesting insight
into Caldey's history.
Returning to the mainland, rejoin your coach and return
to Swansea. |
